Silent Hill.

HotD is actually just a campy rail shooter that no one ever took seriously, it's not really a survival horror series.

Silent Hill. Introduced new aspects to gaming and gave us a disturbing, intriguing, bizarre story with harsh environments.

I chose RE, but that is only because I have this innate fear/hatred for zombies. Plus, it's hard to be scared in SH when one is just fantasizing about Pyramid Head. Twisted Evil
